With the
collapse of an independent, aggressive, inquisitive media
we can no longer rely on mainstream media outlets to provide the information required by citizens participating in a democracy. This failure by mainstream media is itself a heinous abrogation of its intended role under the Constitution as the people’s watchdog over the government and it means that citizens must now work, and work hard, to keep themselves adequately informed. It means that if we want to be active participants in our democracy, and if we are to stand any chance of rescuing it from the precipice of theocratic/corporate ruin on which it now teeters, we can no longer be content to sit and be spoon-fed information by outlets whose corporate owners have a vested interest in what gets reported and how.
In short, it means we have to get up off our asses, actively seek out the information we want, and read, read, read!
Yes, it takes time, and can be a pain, and in the age of video victims it can even almost seem like work. But if you want to know what’s going on in the world, really going on, then there’s no other way but to take it upon yourself to get the information you need.
Lucky for you, we’ve compiled a basic set of resources for you that are listed below. This is in no way a comprehensive list, but it should serve to get you started, and put you on the track to other resources in your specific areas of interest.
And, of course, if you think about it, we’re the media too now, so whatever you do don’t take our word for it either! Surf the web, read the blogs, books, magazines, and dig for your own information and educate yourself about what’s going on in the world and especially what’s at stake here at home. Then be sure to come back here and share what you’ve learned with us!
Like we said, the information listed here is in no way complete, and is really just to get things rolling. They also may or may not reflect our own biases on certain issues…
